This is a series of rare photos taken hundred years ago in Fujian of China. The photos show the tea roasting and packaging at that time.
We can see that in that era without electricity, the chinese teas were dried (or we call roasting or baking) on the bamboo basket, with the heat of charcoal burning. This is very traditional way of drying. And it is very important that no any smoke can occur during the roasting.
Now in many places of China, some tea factories are still using this traditional way to roast tea, eg. Wuyi and Phoenix Town. It is believed that the tea roasted by charcoal heating is much more tasty than those roasted by electricity.
